Advantages and Benefits of Studying in Singapore

Stable Economy

With a GDP of S$160 billion in 2002, the island state though small in size and population (4 million people) has become a reputable financial center, a key regional trading center, the world’s busiest port, and a top location for investment. Often cited as a model for transparency, efficiency and political stability, Singapore has earned recognition from around the world.

The latest 2002 survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) involving 60 economies awarded Singapore the distinction of having the best business environment in Asia. The Swiss-based World Economic Forum (WEF) also rated Singapore as the most competitive economy possessing great innovative ability and a solid macro economy in the world.

Climate

Singapore has an equatorial climate with a uniform temperature throughout the year, abundant rainfall and high humidity. The average daily temperature is 27ºC with a maximum of 31ºC in the afternoon and a minimum of 24ºC before dawn. The rainy season is from November to January and annual rainfall is 235 mm. There may be sudden thunderstorm at other times of the year.

Infrastructure and Accessibility

Singapore is well connected via sea, air and telecommunications to all parts of the world. Singapore Changi Airport serves more than 60 airlines to over 145 cities and has for many consecutive years been nominated as the best airport in the world. It is also probably the most online country in Asia, with 42% of the population having an internet connection.

An efficient and high-quality land transport system seamlessly links all parts of the island. The introduction of an EZ-link card – a swipe less stored value card where consumers need only flash the card in front of a card reader that automatically deducts the required travel fare from the user account, is an example of the continuous commitment by the government to make mass-transit faster and easier.

A Multi-Cultural Nation with a High Quality of Life

The nation’s rich multi-cultural heritage is highlighted through the various ethnic groups (Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians) living together harmoniously that have gradually acquired a distinct identity as Singaporeans whilst still maintaining their separate customs and festivals. In addition, with more than 90,000 professional expatriates living on the island bring their unique cultures and perspectives, adding color and vibrancy to cosmopolitan Singapore.

Singapore’s high standard of living is also something that students can be assured in a survey published in The Economist in March 2002, Singapore’s quality of life surpassed that of London or New York. 39 factors were considered, including political stability, personal freedom, air pollution, the quality of health care, schools, restaurants and theaters.

A Vibrant City Lifestyle

Singapore may seem like a small dot on the world map, but the island state bustles all over with attractions and activities. Dining and shopping are two of the top-rated local activities of locals. Needless to say, this is reflected in the staggering range of foods and cuisine, as well as the increase of shops in the city and suburban centers.

Add to this a thriving arts and cultural scene, enhanced by the recent opening of ‘Esplanade – Theaters on the Bay’, featuring accomplished artistes from all over the world. Ethnic districts such as Little India, Chinatown, Malay Village give a flavor of the culture and history of Singapore. Lots of fun events such as the Great Singapore Sale, Singapore Arts Festival, festive light-ups and many others make Singapore a most “happening” place to be. Singapore is also strategically located at the heart of Asia and can be a hub from which to explore the Southeast Asian region.
